Exploring the Great Barrier Reef
Learn about our 7th Wonder of the World- the Great Barrier Reef, with its extraordinary beauty. This amazing underwater world is filled with rainbows of colour, has over 1,500 species of fish and over 400 kinds of hard and soft corals. The Great Barrier Reef is made up of 3,000 individual coral reefs and is the largest single reef system in the world. This amazing structure runs up the north east coast of Australia for approximately 2,500kms. Scattered throughout the fragile maze of reefs are unspoilt and uninhabited Coral Cays and Islands - perfect for exploring.
There are many options for travellers to experience the reef. Dive right in and submerse yourself 20 meters under in a rainbow colored world, there are many dive operators located along the Queensland coast – most offering day trips with some offering a live aboard adventure’s that can last from 2 to 7 nights and offer some of the most luxurious accommodation on water. Scuba diving may not be for everyone so try your hand at snorkeling amongst the coral, or for those preferring to remain dry the reef can be experienced in great comfort from glass bottom boats.
With a larger number of tour companies making day trips to the reef, the options of how to travel have also grown. Large operators with high speed catamarans take out larger groups, or perhaps you prefer for the small and intimate feeling of being under sail with the wind pushing you along to your destination…whatever your desire there is an option for you.
Stay with the reef at your feet. There are many islands on the reef offering an array of accommodations from camping in tents to being pampered in luxury. Whatever your preference, there is something for everyone.
Ocean going boats not for you? Escape to the air and take a once in a lifetime scenic helicopter flight over the reef counting the numerous little islands along the way…
